ANBP patients gained an average of 21 lbs., ANR patients gained an average of 20 lbs., BN patients has less than 1 lb. Change in weight and EDNOS patients had an average change in weight of 29 lbs. This is as expected: anorexia nervosa patients were underweight and needed to gain weight, bulimic patients were normal weight and the EDNOS patients were overweight and needed to lose weight.
Conclusions
The goals of the program were: 1.) to provide adequate care to patients with eating disorders and 2.) to ensure adequate lengths of hospital stay to prevent relapse. These severely ill patients required lengthy hospital stays and additional partial hospitalization days, but were able to normalize their weight and generally relinquish binge eating and purging. The very positive finding that weights were maintained at follow-up is encouraging. The current average length of follow-up is 14 months.
Fairwinds promotes a “treatment for success” philosophy based on the client following through with his or her personalized aftercare and discharge plan. If the client adheres to the recommended plan, which may include follow-up visits with a therapist, doctor and nutritionist and regular attendance at support group meetings, treatment success increases significantly.
